In 2022 we saw the release of important new research (HAPINZ 3.0) on the impact of air pollution on the health of New Zealanders.
There are two key components of air pollution that affect health: particulate matter (or small particles – PM2.5), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The 2022 research provided a much more accurate estimate of the impact of nitrogen dioxide on health. In general, stricter standards for fireplaces have reduced particulate pollution, while higher levels of driving are increasing levels of NO2 pollution.
The HAPINZ study also has alot of useful graphics on air pollution and health in Aotearoa.
